The Bitesize Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) Dictionary

Welcome to the Bitesize NLP Dictionary for items beginning with M. In this section we recommend you take a look at the Milton Model to give you a taste of the best of Neuro-Linguistic Programming

M

Macro Modelling

More often used in science, this is a description for developing a simulating model of the whole context of any given experience allowing changes in any sub part of the model to be measured and assessed.

item2

Map

See Map of Reality.

item1

Map Of Reality

How one person might uniquely describe an experience. NLP presupposes that "The Map is not the territory" and goes on to explain that we all make our own unique 'Maps' or representations of what we are experiencing. Sometimes also called the Model of the World.

item3

Matching

Subtly copying part's of someones behaviour to facilitate improved communications and Rapport.

item3a1

Meta

A Meta is similar to a tag, something which can be attached to something to add additional information. Price Tags in shops are good examples of Meta Tags. In NLP the term Meta helps us to add additional descriptions to certain patterns of speech.

item4

Meta Model

A set of descriptions for language patterns which demonstrate where someone might be communicating less than clearly. Devised by Richard Bandler and John Grinder the Meta Model describes how people generalise, distort and delete information when they are communicating (internally or externally). The Meta Model also provides clear questions to elicit the missing information.

item5

Meta Outcome

An outome which is the main reason behind another outcome. Example "he jumped in front of a bus, to push a young child to safety".

item6

Meta Position

The observers point of view when considering a strategy or behaviour.

item7

Meta Program

Programs which guide other programs. In NLP Meta Programs describe how your own beliefs, values and behaviours will inevitably guide your daily existence. If you are a 'people person' your actions are likely to be guided by a sense of sociability and you will act differently to a 'lone spirit'. These meta programs will also influence how you might store and organise your memories and how you will react in any given context.

item8

Meta Programme

See Meta Program.

item9

Metacognition

Thinking about how we know what we know and do what we do from an outside perspective (meta-position).

item10

Metaphor

A story which, through indirect communication, facilitates change. These can include parables, similes and allegories. Fairy tales are powerful metaphors.

item11

Metaprograms

See Meta Program.

item12

Meta-Programs

See Meta Program.

item13

Methodology

The principles, rules and tools that describe how we do what we do in any particular strategy or behaviour.

item14

Micro Modelling

Working on a specific part of a process within a specific context. Modelling one element of a strategy.

item15

Milton Model

The Milton Model is the inverse of the Meta Model and is based on techniques developed by hypnotherapist Milton Erickson who used vague language patterns to elicit communication with his subject's unconscious minds. The Milton Model uses distortion, deletion and generalization in a way which allows the subject to create their own path to hypnosis.

The art of elicitation through

Mind Reading

A language distortion where the communicator has predetermined how someone else might think, feel or believe. "I know he thinks I am mad" is a good example.

item17

Mirroring

The matching of another persons body language in order to facilitate improved communications. When people are communicating well they will often be unconsciously matching each other.

item19

Mismatching

Using your body to do something differently to someone else during communications in such a way that the communication breaks down. This can often be seen in arguments where one person is speaking much more quickly than another person.

item18

Mission Statement

A phrase which swiftly encompasses a vision or purpose in such a way that everyone can derive the same meaning. Effective mission statements often include visual, auditory and tactile words to make them appeal to the widest audience.

"Man on the Moon"

Modal Operator

A word which indicates a language requirement or option. In NLP these are words of necessity ("must") and words of possibility ("Should").

Should I?

Modal Operator of Necessity

A word which indicates a particular requirement. ("Must", "Have to").

We Must!

Model Operator of Possibility

A word or words which indicate a particular posibility. ("Might", "Could").

We Could

Modal Operators

See Modal Operator.

Should I?

Model

A practical way of describing how something works or is experienced.

item24

Model of the World

See Map of Reality.

item25

Modeling / Modelling

Breaking down a particular process, strategy or experience into the sum of it's component parts such that a particular pattern of excellence might be described or taught repeatedly to others. For example analyzing a great salesperson and then providing their strategies to others in a team.

item26

Motivation Direction (Meta Program)

One of our internal programs which determines which way we naturally move to motivate ourselves. For example You can move away from criticism, or towards reward.

item27

Multiple Description

The ability to explain one thing from a number of different viewpoints. The more flexible you can be in describing a given experience, the more likely you will be able to communicate it.

item28

Multiple Descriptions

See Multiple Description.

item29

Multiple Intelligences

The belief that a wide range of mental capabilities can be nurtured leading to people having different specialisms. The differing intelligences are sometimes described as Kinesthetic, Lingual, Logical, Personal, Self, Natural, Musical and Visual. Personally I feel visual and I am certainly not musical.
